Court Support Program Volunteer

Victim Services Court Support Volunteers provide a unique service to victims of crime going through the Criminal Justice System. Their role is to provide all justice system related information, accompaniment to court and/or meetings with Crown Counsel, court updates, court orientation, assistance with Crime Victim Assistance Applications and Victim Impact Statements, emotional support and practical resources.

Court Support Volunteers are responsible for the following:

  • Provide court support services and accompaniment as designated by the Court Support Coordinator or other Program Coordinator
  • Provide court orientation as arranged by the Court Support Coordinator and the Sheriff’s office
  • Attend meetings with client and Crown Counsel
  • Provide victims who have been injured physically, emotionally and/or financially with assistance filing a claim with the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP)
  • Provide victims and witnesses with technical assistance in completing a Victim Impact Statement (VIS)
  • Provide court updates as appropriate
  • Conduct safety planning for victims when appropriate including filing documents with the Victim Safety Unit
  • Report all contacts and arrangements to the Court Support Coordinator for entry in the client records
  • Represent and promote the agency at occasional public events/open houses in the community, as requested by the Program Director

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • Must have some availability to attend the courthouse Mon-Fri between 9am-4pm
  • Must complete the online training and provide a certificate of completion
  • Must be willing to complete other training as deemed appropriate
  • Must submit to and pass a Police Records Check (PRC)
  • Must be proficient in both spoken and written English
  • Must possess common sense, maturity, emotional stability and be able to handle difficult situations in a calm and reassuring manner

All GVPVS volunteers are required to sign:

  • Code of Ethics Agreement
  • Confidentiality Agreement
  • Volunteer Commitment Agreement
  • Appropriate Dress Agreement
